A priest and several churchgoers have been injured by a Muslim terrorist in a sword attack on a church in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta.
A 22-year-old Muslim terrorist armed with a sword attacked members of the congregation at St Lidwina Church.
The priest was struck in the back of the head and several others were injured before the terrorist started hacking at a statue of Jesus and Mary.
A patrolling police officer ran into the church and tried to negotiate with the terrorist.
Police said the terrorist charged at the officer, who shot and injured him.
“We cannot confirm yet if this was a terror-related incident,” Yogyakarta said, adding that “we can confirm the suspect has been detained and is being treated at hospital.”
According to the spokesman, the terrorist had been shot in the stomach, while the condition of the wounded victims is still unknown. The police are currently investigating the ‘motives’ of the Muslim terrorist, who is believed to be a university student.
Muslim-majority Indonesia has seen a surge in religious tensions during recent years, with hardline Muslims calling for a nationwide implementation of Sharia law.
