Egypt: 2 killed by bomb in ‘attempted assassination’ of Alexandria security chief

Two people were killed when a bomb exploded under a car in the Egyptian city of Alexandria on Saturday in what appeared to be an assassination attempt on the city’s security chief.

The blast went off as a motorcade carrying Major General Mostafa al-Nemr, Alexandria’s top security official, was passing by in the Roshdi district.

The explosion killed a policeman and another person and wounded four other police officers, according to the state news agency MENA.

“On Saturday March 24 an explosive device planted underneath a car exploded … as the Alexandria security chief drove by,” the interior ministry statement said.

Pictures shared on social media showed smoke billowing from the burned out remains of a car.

No terror group immediately claimed responsibility for the explosion. ISIS released a video last month in which it warned Egyptians against taking part in the upcoming vote and urged its Muslim terrorists to attack security forces and leaders.

ISIS attempted to assassinate Egypt’s defense and interior ministers in December during a trip the pair made to the Sinai Peninsula, where the terror group has been waging an insurgency for almost five years.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Friday that ISIS terrorists would soon be defeated in the Sinai as he visited troops battling the jihadists there.

Polls will open on Monday when voters choose between Sisi and one little-known candidate who supports the former field marshal. All credible opponents dropped out in January, citing intimidation by the authorities after the main challenger was jailed.

Hero: French cop dies after ISIS terrorist shot him in the throat when he swapped himself with female hostage

A French policeman who was shot by an ISIS Muslim terrorist in a supermarket siege after agreeing to take the place of a female hostage has died in hospital.

 Lt.-Col Arnaud Beltrame, 45, was gunned down after rushing to the site of the terror attack in the southwest town of Trebes.

He secretly left his phone on so officers outside could hear what was happening inside — meaning they knew to storm the supermarket straight away when they heard gunshots.

His death was confirmed by Interior Minister Gérard Collomb, who wrote on Twitter: “He died for his country. France will never forget his heroism, his bravery, his sacrifice.”

Paying tribute, President Emmanuel Macron said simply: “He saved lives.”

 

Col Beltrame was one of 16 people injured in the atrocity after the Muslim terrorist, Moroccan Redouane Lakdim, 25, went on a deadly four-hour rampage.

The Muslim terrorist was shot and eliminated.

Armed with a gun, knives and a grenade, the Muslim terrorist began his shooting at around 10am just after reportedly dropping his little sister off at school — killing a driver and wounding passenger as he hijacked their car near the town of Carcassonne.

The terrorist then exchanged gunfire with nearby cops before speeding to the Super U supermarket.

There the Moroccan Islamist screamed ‘Allahu Akbar, I’ll kill you all’ as he killed a butcher and a shopper while terrified customers either fled from the shop or hid in a cold room.

The terrorist demanded the release of Salah Abdeslam, the last surviving terrorist in the November 2015 ISIS attack in Paris that left 130 dead. The 28-year-old French national Muslim of Moroccan descent, is currently in solitary confinement in a high-security prison, awaiting trial.

 

Christian Guibbert, one of about 50 shoppers inside the market, said the terrorist ran after him but he escaped through an emergency exit.

Shop worker Jacky, told Europe 1 radio he “heard people shouting and a big ‘boom.’ It was a gunshot, then a second gunshot.

“After that, my colleagues came toward me saying: ‘Come on Jacky, we need to leave! There’s someone who’s firing shots, he’s shouting “Allahu akbar”.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley blasts UNHRC’s anti-Israel bias

The United States warned Friday that it was losing patience and again threatened to quit the UN Human Rights Council after the Geneva-based body adopted five resolutions condemning Israel.

The 47-member body ended its first and longest session of the year Friday by adopting five resolutions critical of Israel’s behavior toward the Palestinians or throwing support behind the long, fruitless Palestinian cause of statehood.

Another two “country-specific” resolutions focused on Syria, where hundreds of thousands have died in a civil war. South Sudan, Myanmar, Iran and North Korea garnered one each.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley said in a statement that the council was “grossly biased against Israel,” noting that it had adopted only three resolutions separately targeting North Korea, Iran and Syria.

“When the Human Rights Council treats Israel worse than North Korea, Iran, and Syria, it is the council itself that is foolish and unworthy of its name,” said Haley.

“Our patience is not unlimited. Today’s actions make clear that the organization lacks the credibility needed to be a true advocate for human rights,” she said.

Haley has over the past year repeatedly warned that the United States was ready to walk away from the 47-member body established in 2006 to promote and protect human rights worldwide.

The five resolutions were presented by the countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation under the council’s “agenda item 7” which concerns Israel.

Israel is the only country that has a dedicated agenda item at the council.

The UNHRC is notorious for its anti-Israel bias. Several months ago it began sending letters to companies in Israel and around the world, warning them that they are about to be added to a database of companies doing business in Israel.

The Human Rights Council voted to approve the database of companies in 2016, despite objections from the United States and Israel.
