Murdered because she was Jewish: 85-year-old woman raped, stabbed, burned in Paris by Muslim neighbors

Prosecutors investigating brutal murder of 85-year-old Holocaust survivor say the two Muslims in custody targeted the woman because she was Jewish.

Mirelle Knoll, an Holocaust survivor, was found dead on Friday inside the blackened remains of her apartment, which police suspect was set ablaze after she was attacked.

A forensic examination of the apartment showed that an arsonist started a fire in at least five different areas of that space.

Two Muslims have been detained but have not yet been charged.

A 29-year-old Muslim was arrested on Saturday, with the second Muslim taken into custody on Sunday.

“The barbarity of this murder sends us back to that of Sarah Halimi just one year ago,” Francis Kalifat, president of the CRIF umbrella of French Jewish communities, said in a statement Monday. CRIF is organizing a memorial march in Kanol’s memory Tuesday.

The prosecutor’s office reportedly has asked that the Muslims remain in preventative custody. They will face possible charges of “murder related to the victim’s religion, real or imagined,” as well as aggravated robbery and destruction of property, AFP reported, citing judicial sources.

As a child in Paris, Knoll managed to evade the round-up of Jews during World War Two, Paris lawmaker Meyer Habib said.

Thousands of Jews were brought to the Velodrome d’Hiver cycling track in 1942 and sent on to Nazi death camps.

“The horror of the crime and the violence of the executioners are identical and reflect the negation of the human face,” Chief Rabbi Haim Korsia said in a tweet.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who is visiting Israel, said the theory that Knoll’s death was anti-Semitic was plausible.

“It reminds us of the fundamental and permanent side of this battle (against anti-Semitism),” he said, speaking alongside Prime Minister

Knoll’s murder took place a year to the day after the murder of Sarah Halimi-Attal, a 66-year-old Jewish woman thrown off balcony by her Muslim neighbor in Paris.

Last month, the brutal murder of Sarah Halimi, has been declared an “anti-Semitic attack”, following global outcry at French authorities’ refusal to condemn the murder as an anti-Jewish hate crime.

The US expels 60 Russian diplomats followed by Europe in an unprecedented show of support for Britain

President Trump on Monday ordered the expulsion of 60 Russian intelligence officers in the United States and the closure of the Russian consulate in Seattle in response to the nerve agent attack on an ex-Russian spy in the U.K. earlier this month, senior administration officials said.

The steps, following Britain’s expulsion of Russian diplomats, are meant to send a message to Moscow that actions have consequences, the officials said. The Seattle consulate is being closed because of its proximity to submarine bases, as well as Boeing.

“With these steps, the United States and our allies and partners make clear to Russia that its actions have consequences,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said. “The United States stands ready to cooperate to build a better relationship with Russia, but this can only happen with a change in the Russian government’s behavior.”

Russian diplomats were expelled from 14 EU states today in an unprecedented show of defiance to the Kremlin over the Salisbury attack.

EU Council President Donald Tusk revealed the coordinated action at a press conference in Bulgaria today.

Germany, France and Poland each expelled four diplomats, which Lithuania, Latvia and the Czech Republic also took action. Ukraine – not an EU state – joined the European revolt by expelling 13 diplomats.

Britain led the way in the aftermath of the March 4 attack by expelling 23 Russian diplomats from London. The Kremlin kicked out 23 Britons as a reprisal.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Theresa May said she ‘welcomes the action by our allies’, adding that it demonstrates ‘we stand shoulder to shoulder in sending the strongest signal to Russia that it cannot continue to flout international law’.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson hailed the ‘largest collective expulsion’ in history and said it would help defend our ‘shared security’.

Russia’s Foreign ministry slammed the ‘provocative’ expulsions and vowed to respond in kind.

Israel air defense chief: Iron Dome made no mistakes – ‘We don’t take chances’

Brig.-Gen. Zvi Haimovitch, the IDF air defense commander, Monday maintained that there was “no malfunction or human error” in the performance of the Iron Dome short-range missile defense system Sunday. The battery fired multiple missiles, he said, after identifying a projectile launched against Israel.

“There was system oversensitivity, and we had five seconds to decide. We don’t take chances in situations with even the slightest potential of harming either civilians or property,” said Haimovich.

Israel air defense chief Iron Dome made no mistakes - 'We don't take chances'

“The system recognized rocket fire that may threaten the Zikim area,” he explained. “We do our best not to take chances at (non-war) times, and the number of rockets is therefore not representative of the number of threats or the number of risks.”

“We want to maximize defense, and that carries a price. The cost is outside of military and operational considerations when it comes time to make a decision. Not only was there no human or technical error last night, but the forces acted with the utmost professionalism and will learn from the event,” he said.

The senior IAF official then went on to refute Arab claims that intercepting rockets fell within the Gaza Strip’s territory. “A launch on a trajectory towards Israel was recognized. It acted ballistically for all intents and purposes. I did not care at the time whether it was a mortar, rocket or heavy machine gun,” he said.

The air defense chief elucidated that his forces “operate in a highly complex environment that includes mortars, rockets, missiles, machineguns and heavy machine guns—some of which are regulation and some that aren’t.”

“Yesterday’s incident had a five-second reaction time in which we needed to decide, and that takes courage, clarity and professionalism because the range was five kilometers. There was the potential of civilians being harmed, but none weren’t. We’ll continue minimizing risks even at the price of paying high costs,” he vowed.

The heavy machine gun fire, the officer noted, was picked up by the Iron Dome’s radars as ballistic rocket launches. “I’ll intercept threats during (non-war) times that I won’t during emergency situations, and if need be I’ll send double interceptors at threats,” Haimovich clarified. “Rockets exist today that are fired like artillery mortars. Our enemies are in an arms race.”

“I don’t fear a situation in which I’ll be left without intercepting missiles,” Haimovich stated. “No system is without its limitations or weaknesses. There’s not a lot of time for deliberation in situations like this. Weighing risk against chance, I’d rather go with chance.”
