Iran’s official IRNA news agency reports that a dual Iranian and Canadian citizen who ‘killed himself’ in mysterious circumstances while in detention at Tehran’s Evin Prison, was sending information to the US and Israeli intelligence services.
The report Tuesday says Kavous Seyed-Emami, a university professor, was in custody for passing information on the country’s missile bases to the CIA and Mossad and planning to create environmental crisis. The report didn’t elaborate.
IRNA quotes Tehran prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolatabdi as saying Seyed-Emami and a network of people installed cameras in strategic areas of the country pretending to observe environmental issues but, in fact “it was for monitoring the country’s missile activities and they were sending images and information to foreigners.”
Dolatabdi said Seyed-Emami hosted one of two US intelligence officers during their visit to Iran. He didn’t elaborate.
Hadi Ghaemi, executive director of the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI), said on Monday that the prosecutor’s report claiming Seyed Emami committed suicide has “no credibility whatsoever.
“This is a prison system out of control and a judiciary that is actively colluding in a massive cover-up,” Ghaemi, who is based in New York, said.
He said the judiciary must also allow “an independent and transparent autopsy” in order for his family and the public to know how he died.
Seyed Emami was one of the founders of the Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation, which is working to protect Iran’s wildlife and promote conservation projects.
