Spillover on the Golan Heights – Gunshots fired at Israeli drone patrolling Syrian border

Unidentified sources opened fire on Thursday at an Israeli Skylark unmanned aircraft that was patrolling the Syrian border. No damage was done to the drone, but bullets and signs of damage were found in the Druse town of Majdal Shams.

Two bullets were fired from a Syrian machine gun at the IDF’s drone, which was used to gather intelligence in the northern Golan.

Earlier that day, several bullets hit a house in Majdal Shams in the northern Golan Heights and a mortar shell landed near a school in Kibbutz Natur.

No injuries were reported and lessons are back on schedule.

No one was injured, but house suffered damage.

IDF believes the shooting was due to spillover from the internal fighting in Syria.

A few days ago the Syrian army claimed that Syrian air defenses intercepted several Israeli missiles targeting an Iranian base west of the capital of Damascus.

During the years of the war in Syria, the infighting at times led to spillover of mortar shells and gunshots into the Israeli Golan. In some cases, the IDF retaliated and even destroyed Syrian army artillery batteries.

Meet The 10 Athletes Who Will Represent Team Israel 2018

Ten Israelis athletes will represent Israel in four sports at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, February 9-25. Short-track speed skater Vladislav Bykanov, Alpine skier Itamar Biran, skeleton racer Adam (AJ) Edelman, and figure skaters Alexei (Oleksii) Bychenko, Daniel Samohin, Evgeni Krasnopolsky, Paige Conners, Adel Tankova, Ronald Zilberberg and Aimee Buchanan.

Seven of Israel’s 10 representatives will compete in figure skating. That group is anchored by Alexei Bychenko, who in 2016 became the first skater to earn a medal for Israel at a European

 

Championships event. Bychenko, 29, who skated for Ukraine until 2009 and has been ranked as one of the top 10 male skaters in the world, is likely Israel’s best chance to win a medal (and like US Jewish gymnast Aly Raisman, Bychenko has been known to perform to “Hava Nagila”).

Only three of the 2018 Olympics teammates (Biran, Samohin and Zilberberg) are Israeli by birth. Bychenko, Bykanov, Krasnopolsky and Tankova are Ukrainian natives, while Edelman, Conners and Buchanan were born in the United States.

Edelman took up skeleton racing – where the athlete rides prone on a small sled down a frozen track — only four years ago and is self-coached. He was quoted as saying that whether or not he comes home with a medal, “The most important thing to me is that there will be a lasting image of another Israeli walking behind the flag.”

A few years ago, A.J. Edelman was an MIT graduate who worked as a product manager for Oracle. Now the Brookline, Massachusetts, native will get a chance to make history for Israel as he becomes the country’s first skeleton Olympian next week, steering a flimsy sled down the track at the Pyeongchang Sliding Center.

“I want to challenge the perception of what Jews and Israelis can do in sports,” he told the Forward.

He is also clearly a fan of the comedy film “The Hebrew Hammer,” since he goes by the protagonist’s nickname. While his teammates and friends love it, his mother apparently doesn’t.

Israeli technology will be featured at the Winter Games, too. Thanks to a deal between Intel and the International Olympic Committee, special viewing features will be available from Israeli startup Replay Technologies. Acquired by Intel in 2016, the company uses voxels (pixels with volume) to render replays in spectacular 3D, creating a 360-degree view of key moments. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said these features will allow more people to “experience a prime seat while being anywhere in the world.”

In addition, the Israeli athletes are tailoring their menus individually by using the Israeli Day Two app to keep their blood-glucose levels balanced.

US: 19-year-old Muslima who set fires on campus and told students to ‘join the Jihad’, indicted on terrorism charges

A Minnesota Muslima terrorist accused of encouraging two fellow college students to ‘join the Jihad’ months before she set several fires on campus was charged Wednesday with a federal terrorism count.

Tnuza Jamal Hassan, 19, of Minneapolis was charged with one count of attempting to provide material support to al-Qaeda, one count of lying to the FBI and one federal arson count. She also faces a state arson charge in connection with the Jan. 17 fires on the campus of St. Catherine University in St. Paul.

According to a federal indictment, she attempted to provide material support to al-Qaeda on Sept. 19 by trying to provide “personnel” to the terrorist group.

 

The indictment also said Hassan wrote and delivered a letter to two fellow students in March in an attempt to encourage them to “join the jihad in fighting” and to join al-Qaeda, the Taliban or al-Shabab. When asked about that letter on Sept. 22, she told FBI agents that she didn’t write it, didn’t know who wrote it and didn’t know how it was delivered to her peers.

According to state court documents, Hassan set fires on campus in January because she was angry about U.S. military actions overseas. No one was injured in the fires, but one was set in a dormitory that houses a daycare. A sprinkler system prevented that fire from spreading beyond a chair to the daycare center, where 33 children and eight adults were present.

The state criminal complaint said Hassan admitted she set the fires because she read about the U.S. military destroying schools in Iraq or Afghanistan and she wanted to do the same thing.

“Hassan said she wanted the school to burn to the ground and that her intent was to hurt people,” the state complaint said.

‘She told the police and fire investigators ‘You guys are lucky that I don’t know how to build a bomb because I would have done that.’
