The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said a Hamas terror tunnel running from the Zeitoun neighborhood in Gaza to Israel was hit in the attack, as well as a military complex in the vicinity of Netzarim and another complex around Khan Yunis.

“The IDF views harshly the Hamas terror organization’s attempt to carry out popular and spontaneous protests which appear to be aimed at turning the border area into an area of conflict and using it to carry out terror attacks, which will disrupt the stability in Gaza.

“Hamas is responsible for the incident and its effects, as well as everything else which happens in Gaza and leaves Gaza, above and below ground.

“The IDF is determined to provide security for Israeli residents, and will do that by every available means.”

Hamas’s armed wing  Izz ad-Din al-Qassam terrorists officially announced to have targeted Israel Air Force jets carrying out attacks in Gaza with anti-aircraft fire.

It marked the first time Hamas terror group confirmed offensive actions against the IDF since the conclusion of Operation Protective Edge.

A Code Red alarm sounded in communities in Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council and another one sounded minutes later in the Eshkol Regional Council.

A rocket fired from Gaza toward Southern Israel exploded near a home in the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council. No one was hurt but several people were stricken with anxiety and the residence was damaged.

The IDF said the Code Red alarm triggered in the Eshkol Regional Council was falsely triggered.
